Just something that occurred to me while browsing these forums. The most recent activity seems to be about three months old, so I dunno if anyone's still checking this, but- eh, what the heck.
Though the other post in this forum referred to using a laser only to ionize the air, I imagine that a true laser-saber would use the laser itself to do the cutting. Assuming that you found a way around the length problem(perhaps very crudely, like a mirror on the end of a rod), it still seems to me that eye damage would still be a worry. Any laser powerful enough to cut objects rapidly is going to be VERY powerful- definitely a Class 4. That's powerful enough that even looking at an object it was cutting could blind you.
I know the military is looking into contact lenses that block out specific frequencies, and they already have laser safety eye wear. But still- having to worry about your glasses getting knocked off during a fight sounds serious. Not to mention innocent bystanders...
Personally, I like the plasma or electrosaber ideas better.
Excellent forum, by the way!

That's a good point...I think I would only use a laser in a lightsaber to make the blade visible, not to actually do any cutting.
